DATE: Victorian, c.1890

A remarkable antique brooch formed as an ivy leaf. It's set with a piece of fossilised coral, beautifully patterned with mottled blue/grey and striking flecks of red - the internal structure of the coral wonderfully preserved in fine detail. The brooch dates from the latter half of the 19th century... which feels like a long time ago until you consider that the coral is in the region of 150-300 million years old. Modelled in sterling silver.
